Continuing Medical Education |
| Introduction | Faculty & Staff |
The Hawai‘i Consortium for Continuing Medical Education (HCCME) administers and manages the certification program for continuing medical education (CME) activities for physicians. The mission of the HCCME, a joint venture of the Hawaii Medical Association (HMA) and JABSOM, is to support the highest quality of patient care, teaching, and research through appropriate and timely education with information on current and vital issues of medicine and medical practice for doctors of medicine and osteopathy in the State of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. The format of activities presented utilizes new and innovative technology and includes but is not limited to lectures/discussions, small group presentations, workshops, departmental and interdepartmental scientific meetings, regularly scheduled conferences, tutorials, and neighbor island outreach activities. The educational activities provide opportunities for participants to review the basic medical sciences and their application to clinical medicine, learn new knowledge and technology, master specific skills and techniques, and improve professional performance.
The HCCME is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Legislation mandates evidence of CME as a requirement for licensure in Hawai‘i and there is an increasing utility of CME in periodic recertification by national specialty boards. CME equally serves as a vehicle for faculty development.
An equal number of representatives from HMA and JABSOM constitute the HCCME sponsorship committee. Administrative responsibility for the JABSOM program of CME rests with the Director of Graduate Affairs.
